We had always been fans of the Modern Love column and the animations created from those stories.
When the series producer, Nicholas van der Kolk, sent us Nikolina's story we knew we had something great on our hands. A really personal and relatable story with the war in former-Yugolsavia haunting it in the background.

Aesthetically we wanted to create something minimal yet sensitive. We went for a graphic approach for the backgrounds, simples lines and shapes with a gentler treatment for the characters, and all realised in a 90’s Balkan-inspired colour palette. At that young age the school environment is very powerful , so we used it as a framework for their teenage romance.
